Team roles and permissions

Team roles and permissions

Every person attached to your team holds one of four roles. The role controls what they can see and change in the team admin area. This article explains what each role can do and how roles relate to seats.

The three roles

Team Owner: The top level role, normally the person who created the team and the billing contact. The Owner can do everything in the team admin area: invite and remove members, purchase seats, change the renewal seat count, manage the payment method, assign courses, and pull reports.

Team Admin: Has the same access to the team admin area as the Owner. An Admin can add and remove members, purchase seats, assign courses, and view billing. Most teams name at least one Admin so day to day work does not stall when the Owner is out.

Team Member: No administrative access at all. A Team Member gets the benefit of the seat they are assigned, which is course access, and nothing else. This is the role most of your people will have.

Roles and seats

Roles and seats are two separate things. A role says what somebody can administer. A seat says whether they have course access.

If an Owner, Admin, or Staff member is taking courses, they consume a seat just like anyone else. If they are purely administrative and will never take a course through the team, contact us and we can set them as admin only so they do not consume a seat.

Team Members always consume a seat while they have course access.

For more on how seats are counted and billed, see How team seats work.

Setting a role

You choose the role when you invite someone. The  Invitation Email window has a Role dropdown that defaults to Team Member.

To change the role of somebody already on your team, open their member record from the  Details column on the Team Members page.
